Mary Robinson announces that she will not be running for President

29 Oct, 2009

There has been a lot of conjecture recently about the possible candidates for the roles of the permanent President of EU Council and the Foreign Policy Chief, who will also serve as Vice-president of the Commission. However, the speculative candidate list has been very male dominated and much of the conversation has focussed around the British ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The Commission’s Vice-President Margot Wallström has criticized the lack of female candidates as ‘shameful’, and argues that at least one of these newly created positions should go to a woman. She said that “what is being overlooked is that there are many very competent women candidates”.

The former Irish President Mary Robinson was for awhile floated around as strong potential candidate. However, she has disappointed many by announcing that she will not be running, she said "I share the aspiration that a woman candidate will become apparent, and indeed successful, for one of the senior posts in the EU but that person will not be me".
