Strong Showing for Women in Labour's Shadow Team

11 Oct, 2010

38% of Labour's new shadow ministerial team are women - 39 out of the total 101 appointed by new Leader Ed Miliband over the last few days.

After the addition of Peter Hain (Wales) and Shaum Woodward (Northern Ireland) 42% of the Shadow Cabinet is female. However, of the 4 people who also attend, 3 are women.

Of the junior ministerial appointments made over the weekend, 23 (38%) were women, as well as 23% of junior whips.

However, of the MPs first elected in 2010 appointed to positions in the shadow team, 57% (12 out of 21) are women, including the Shadow Solicitor-General, Catherine McKinell.

11% of members of the Coalition government are women (22% of the Cabinet).
