Record Number of Women in Labour Shadow Cabinet

8 Oct, 2010

Eight women have been elected to Labour's new Shadow Cabinet - two more than the rules required. A woman - Yvette Cooper - topped the poll by some distance, and the successful candiates include the first out lesbian woman to hold office in the UK at this level (Angela Eagle) and the first twin sisters (Angela and Maria Eagle).

The fact that eight women were elected rather than the mandatory six is also testament to the fact that, given a wide field of candidates to choose from, Labour MPs voted on merit as well as in accordance with the requirements of the ballot.

The question now is how the jobs are districuted - hopefully we will see women occupying some of the really high profile posts and contributing to the process of changing the face of British politics.
