Prior to the Queen's Speech, there had been some speculation that the Equalities Bill might not be included in it. However, it has survived any hypothetical axe there may have been, and is to feature iin the legislative process of this parliament.
This is good news. The Bill may not be perfect - what Bill is? - but it addresses a number of issues that need to be resolved, and, even more important, it flags up the fact that equality is an aspiration which has yet to be achieved.
Of course it is the case that equality is about more than legislation. But it is neverthess a relief to see that this particular piece of legislation still matters, and that the long crawl towards a more equal society is ongoing.
