Gender equality worldwide slipping backwards.

27 Oct, 2016

The recently-published World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2016 finds that overall women's equality has stalled, and in some cases is going backwards.

The report is an annual benchmarking exercise that measures progress towards parity between men and women in four areas: Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, Economic Opportunity and Political Empowerment. In this latest edition, the report finds that progress towards parity in the key economic pillar has slowed dramatically with the gap – which stands at 59% – now larger than at any point since 2008.

Political Empowerment is the area in which there is both the largest gap and the greatest progress over the last 10 years. However, women in this field are starting from a low base: only 4 countries have reached gender equality when it comes to legislators, and most have never had a female head of state or prime minister.
