How We Got Here: Women’s Political History

Just 22% of the UK’s MPs are women, but even that is the result of centuries of work and campaigning by women from all sections of society. We’ve all heard of the suffragettes, but who were all the other women who fought for so much, including a woman’s right to retain her own earnings (1870), to be legally considered a ‘person’ in her own right (1929), and to sit in the House of Lords (1958), and why should we remember them? How can their achievements inform what women need to do next to continue the push for equality in public decision-making, and what can we learn from them?

This 2-hour workshop answers these and many other questions, and offers participants the chance to develop a much better understanding of how women in the UK have achieved their current legal and political position, and what still needs to happen.
