Women in the 2009 European Elections In June 2009
European Elections took place across Europe, How did women fare in them, especially in the UK? Has the number of women MEPs
increased or declined, and where are the variations? This report looks at what happened on 4 June from the point of view of
women's representation, and can be downloaded using the link below.

Women in the 2009 European Elections
Women in the 2009 Mayoral Elections There were elections on 4 June for three
of the twelve elected mayors in England. Prior to this, only one was a woman - has this now changed, and, if so, where? How
many women stood for election to these posts, and how did the political parties do in terms of women candidates? This report
looks at these three elections and puts them into context; you can download it using the link below.

2009 Local
Elections in New (Super-Unitary) Authorities Five new unitary authorities
came into existance on 1 April this year and held their first elections on 4 June. How did women fare at those elections?
This provisional report looks at the broad picture, and finds that, despite good intentions, women's representation has
not improved. Download the report using the link below, and keep an eye out for a series of CFWD reports over the next few
weeks - on the local, European and mayoral elections.

Changing Faces? Political Parties, Women,
and the 2008 elections
Did you know that, whilst
everyone's talking about increasing the number of women councillors, it actually went down in 2008? This report looks
at what happened and why, not just in terms of seats won and lost, but of how well the parties did in fielding women
candidates and getting them into winnable seats, and how far they lived up to their own aspirations (and rhetoric).
Some did better than others, but all of them could do better still, and will need to if we are to change the face of local
government.
To find out whether your party bucked the trend, and what the prospects are for the future use the
link below to download the Executive Summary, or email us here with your name and address and we will send you a copy of the full report free of charge.

Changing Faces? Political Parties, Women, and the 2008 Local Elections - Executive Summary
2009 marks the 80th anniversary of universal suffrage in the UK. To mark it, we will be publishing
a special commemorative book in May, and launching it at events in London and Leeds. Other activities for the year include
developing new seminars for women councillors, working with partners on new research on leadership and gender, setting up
new networks and publishing work on the 2009 local and European elections.
